I want to cheer for Khulu, the one you knew and the one inside you. Let me know what you are reading, I may have a book or two that can add fuel and stoke that fire for more while gaining more and more of Khulu contentment.
Long live Khulu! I have that book on my someday list now. What does it say? I like the old school old thought ones dealing in cosmic laws. A good short one would be "As a man thinketh" - by James Allen (a good balance of biblical and physical science.) From the books i enjoy reading, nations fail because of a collective consciousness / dominant consciousness of failure born of souls that are not reaching out for higher ideals. Rhodesia though oppresive had a dominant conscious can do attitude and a type of honest and decent behaviour. Liberated us though oppressive has a dominant selfishness and corruption of soul which shows as corruption in handling public funds, lying and cheating even on a small scale like vendors kumusika and so on. If the souls get their surgery (Quen B in the house) the nation can be fixed. Also i like the differentiation between nations (peoples) vs countries (which can more point to land masses.) I am curious to know what the book you are reading says.
I have read As a man thinketh, one of my favorite all time reads. I'd say another favourite in this genre would be "Man's search for meaning" by Viktor Frankl.
"Why Nations Fail" provides an explanation as to why some nations are more wealthier and prosperous than others. Basically speaks to the same reasons you give, but refutes a lot of conventional wisdom like saying geographical location or religion are great causes for wealth disparities. While true to an extent, those don't tell the whole story...

Khulu was a great man, mate. Currently reading Why nations fail but would love any book recommendations… Of knowledge there is no end!
